Learning a lot back at school

I’ve learned a lot in my first month of Interior Design school… this program is very intensive and requires a lot of work – but I love it… Interior Design is much more that interior decorating… so many styles, colors, fabrics, elements to choose from… it’s a competitive industry (but what isn’t right now?)… and I’m more excited than ever to keep learning about it.

Dining Rooms

Ok, I went with dining rooms next. The following photos were taken from Elle Decor, Pottery Barn and Architectural Digest magazines. Some of them I like and a few have certain aspects that are appealing…

The dark wood and white are a great contrast together. It’s a casual, but elegant combination. I like that it’s nice and light.

I love the green lime color in this dining area. The fresh, citrusy colors are energizing and refreshing.

This room is almost futuristic. It may not necessarily be comfortable, but it’s beautiful… very open and light.

The architecture is unique in this room. The corner is being used well. Nice, big open windows keep an area that could be very dark, light.

I don’t really like how formal this one is, but I love the way the designer created an artwork collage on the wall.

Bedrooms

I am going to start a series of posts describing my design preferences before going to interior design school. I’m interested in seeing how my tastes and knowledge change as I get more education and exposure to the industry. Since I’m thinking of redecorating my condo, I thought I would go through each of the rooms that I want to redesign and show pictures of what I like.

I’m starting with the bedroom. Each of the following pictures is from the Pottery Barn web site because currently, that’s my favorite place for looking at full room designs.

I love the bright colors – especially orange – in this happy room. The seat at the foot of the bed in the same color as the fabric hanging on the bed canopy is a nice touch and ties everything together. The bright colors against a white room are a good contrast.

This room also has the warm orangey-gold colors against a white bedroom. I love the french doors and how open the room feels.

My favorite is the dark cherry wood in this room. The bricks on one wall are a gorgeous earthy color and the bedspread is of similar colors, tying it all together. Wood floors in a similar palette keep the room spacious-feeling.

Finally, I love the yellow walls in this room… I’m a huge fan of warm orange and yellow colors. They are very soothing.

I think I’ll pick out bathrooms next…

I submitted my application to the Design Institute of San Diego. Now I’m getting recommendations and transcripts and then headed in for a second interview. So, I’ve decided to make the leap and go back to school! As long as they accept me…

Then, it’s balancing classes, projects and homework, along with work and personal life. Oh, and getting more involved in the interior design world. Look out!

Contemplating school

Ok, so I’m thinking about taking the leap and going back to school. At 34 years old, does it make sense to change careers to follow my lifelong passion? That is the question I have been asking myself for many years. If I’ve been dreaming of becoming an interior designer since I was 12, shouldn’t I follow that dream? It’s never too late, right?

Sure… and to give up the comfortable salary and job I have… give up my spare time for over four years… test the marriage…

How does one decide?
